More Types of Rails

In our last blog post, we looked at the three most common types of rails: dovetail, Weaver, and Picatinny rails. In this blog post, we'll take a look at a few other types of rails: the Warsaw Pact rail, the KeyMod, and the M-LOK.

RailScales makes the best rail covers for your gun. Our superior product is created to lower the heat generated from repeated firing to protect your hands, to increase your grip, and to protect the rails of your gun. While these rail accessories have been around for a while, we believed we could make them fit better, look better, and function better, which is what we have done. You will be amazed at how well they fit, how good they look, and at how capable they are of performing the job right. Below, we'll look at more types of rails. MORE TYPES OF RAILS

Warsaw Pact Rail

A Warsaw Pact rail is a variant of the dovetail rail system that was developed by the Soviet Union so that telescopic sights could be side-mounted. This type of mount became standard on all AK rifles beginning in 1992.

KeyMod Rails

The KeyMod rail gets its name from the keyhole profile of the systems' mourning slots and the modular design. It is an open-source design, which means anyone can manufacture these and sell them unhindered without compensating the inventors. The advantage of the KeyMod rail is that it allows you to attach accessories, such as laser mounts, sights, and vertical grips without any adapter. You basically slide the attachment forward once you line up the lugs on the round portion of the keyholes on the rail. Without the need for an adapter, this makes the use of the KeyMod rail system light, much lighter than Picatinny. This makes your gun easier to handle, control, and carry around with you. The edges aren't sharp like a Picatinny rail are either.

M-LOK Rails

Developed off the back of KeyMod rails in 2014, the M-LOK rail system is designed to work better with polymer attachments. It uses a slot system rather than holes. This open-source product comes with t-shaped, bi-directional attachment lugs so you can place attachments either on the front or the rear of slots. This rail is lightweight and takes attachments easily.

Both the KeyMod and the M-LOK rails are similar, so it comes down to personal preference. Since both are less than 10 years old, it's hard to say which is better. Both are equally good, and the differences are subtle enough that it will probably come down to price point that determines who will pull ahead. The M-LOK system is compatible with plastic hand guards and thus can be produced easier. However, KeyMod was founded two years before the M-LOK, causing many manufacturers to already use its system to create their gun accessories. RailScales predicts that this debate will go on for a while longer.
