In our last blog post, we examined the important role the Springfield 1911 played in our history. Today, we'll take a brief look at its impact and use today.

MODERN USE OF THE MODEL 1911

Modern Use

The Model 1911 continued to serve the military throughout all of our armed combat, from the Korean War to the Vietnam War. Many returning servicemen took up shooting competitions and sports, where it was realized that the Model 1911 was not the fastest on the draw. However, instead of modifying the gun, the method of shooting was modified. Known as the Modern Technique, this method uses a one-hand draw into a two-handed hold, and then uses the sights to fire at your target. This method is now the basis for all combat pistol shooting classes, including for the US military around the world.

The Model 1911 remains today as popular as ever. There are whole companies dedicated to parts and accessories around this firearm (we have dedicated a whole RailScale Line to the 1911). It is the firearm of choice for shooting competition pistols, and with the rise of personal safety and concealed carry classes beginning in the 1980s, you can bet a fair number of those carrying concealed pack a 1911.

In an effort to be more in tune with NATO and share ammunition, the US Military adopted the 9mm M9 pistol in 1985 as their official handgun of choice. The Model 1911 was retired. However, it was soon realized that a 9 mm does not have the stopping power that a .45 caliber bullet does, so this decision was soon reversed. It's a lesson learned the hard way: don't replace what is irreplaceable.

Arguably the M1911 is the most influential handgun ever. It was developed by John Browning to meet the needs of our fighting forces, and has continued to serve our modern military and police with stunning accuracy, reliability, and functionality. It is a popular choice for recreational use, competitive shooting, and concealed carry. It now comes in smaller frames, different calibers (including larger ones), and a ton of aftermarket support, from laser sights to hand grips, like ours. Suffice it to say, you don't fix something that works, so the Model 1911 will be around for a very long time.
