Gun Range Etiquette

For gun enthusiasts, shooting their firearms is one of the best parts about gun ownership. Shooting is not only a good idea in order to improve your accuracy and shooting skills, but it's just plain fun, especially if you are shooting an AR-15. The AR-15s are one of the best guns to shoot because they are lightweight, easy to hold and carry, and a semi-automatic firearm, making rapid fire possible. There's a reason AR-15s are one of the most popular guns in the United States.

RailScales offers the best rail covers, handstops, and 1911 grips. Our textured grip panels are made of G10 material, which is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate made of a composite material that is extremely thin. These handguard rails will protect your hands from the heat generated from rapid fire and give you a better grip when needed. Below, we'll go over some tips for gun range etiquette. GUN RANGE ETIQUETTE

Respect The Range Safety Officer

Like the range safety officer's name implies, their job is to keep everyone safe while practicing shooting. They have ultimate say when you are on the gun range, so it's imperative that you listen to their directions. They will call out cease fires and when the range is live so that you can shoot. If the range officer tells you to stop doing something or gives you some other sort of directive, you need to follow it. Range officers have undergone extensive training on how to keep a gun range safe, so they are only doing their job when they tell you something. Their jobs are extremely important, but also difficult. They have to shout orders to be heard, which can make them seem mean. Remember not to take any orders directed at yourself personally.

Clean Up After Yourself

When people are shooting, they tend to make a mess. Shell casings fly everywhere. Empty ammunition boxes can end up on the ground. Targets can get ripped to shreds, and food wrappers can get left. No one likes a slob or a litter bug. It's important to pick up after yourself so that the range stays clean and safe for everyone. It's super easy to slip on brass casings lying on the ground. Remember, too, only to touch your empty brass. Some people like to keep their brass casings and perhaps reuse them if they see fit.

Know Your Target

One of the first rules of shooting no matter if you are on the range, hunting, or elsewhere is to know your target. You don't want to be shooting at something that is not appropriate to shoot at. For example, you don't want to be shooting at targets that are off-limits at the gun range. These include shooting at posts, supports, or other target frames. You only want to be shooting range-approved targets, such as paper, clays, metal targets that are designed to be shot, cardboard, and more. When you are shooting by yourself, feel free to shoot other materials, such as aluminum cans and glass bottles.

Bring Safety Gear

You want to be prepared for shooting when you head to the range. This ensures you have all of the proper safety gear in addition to your firearm. You'll need ear protection so as not to damage your hearing, so ear muffs or ear plugs are a must. You'll need eye protection, so clear glasses are recommended. Sunglasses work; however, you can become used to shooting through them, so one day in a pinch when you need to shoot, you could be thrown off by not having your sunglasses on. You'll need to have your gun in its case when you show up. Let's face it, walking around with a gun in the open unless you are practicing open carry only makes people nervous and can be a safety concern for staff.

Be Safe

One of the most important rules anytime you handle a firearm is to be safe. This means following the basic gun safety rules, which include always keeping your gun pointed in a safe direction, always keeping your finger off the trigger unless you are ready to shoot, and keep your gun unloaded until ready to fire. You want to be cognizant of those around you and making sure they are safe as well. On a gun range, anyone can call a cease fire, so if you notice someone around you being unsafe, you can call a cease fire in order to address the situation. When not shooting, you will want to make sure the gun is placed on the table with its muzzle pointed down range. In short, if you arrive with an attitude towards safety, you will have a great time and ensure no one gets hurt.
